San Diego Italian Film Festival
October 13th, 2022
This year has marked our seventh annual partnership with the San Diego Italian Film Festival.
For the past 12 years, the San Diego Italian Film Festival has used the art of film to educate, provoke thought, stimulate conversation, and share stories. Their main tool is Italian cinema, and through the lens of Italian culture, they value and savor cultural differences through sharing.
The film selection for this year is Qui rido io ["The King of Laughter"]. Naples, 1904: Italian theatre is thriving, and comic actor Eduardo Scarpetta is the box office king. Known in the Neapolitan theater for his cheeky alter egos, Scarpetta’s larger-than-life stage productions were matched only by his eccentric personal life. Composed of wives, partners, lovers, legitimate and illegitimate children (including a young Eduardo De Filippo, famed Neapolitan playwright), Scarpetta’s home situation resembled one of his comedies more than a traditional family. The King of Laughter is an extraordinary movie by film and theater director Mario Martone, featuring Italian star Toni Servillo.
As always, Little Fish’s students will be creating posters inspired by this year’s chosen film. The posters be on display on the Film Festival’s website. A special panel was produced with the Film Festival prior to the event. Please check out the artwork created by our students below!
